Streator Man Launches “Wheeled Respect” Program
Finally, a way to move through town without tearing it up

STREATOR, IL — After months of passionately criticizing the dirt bikes and ATVs that treat Marilla Park like a personal racetrack, local civic watchdog Brett Baumrucker is shifting gears. Literally. This week, he launched a new initiative aimed at teaching Streator residents—young and old—how to move on wheels without ruining public property or ticking off the neighbors.

“I’m tired of people acting like the only way to have fun is by roaring down a nature trail on a two-stroke,” Baumrucker declared while standing triumphantly on a scooter near the park’s locked bathroom. “There’s a better way.”

Scoot Smarter, Not Louder

The new program, called Lessons in Respectable Wheeled Travel, includes weekly clinics in:

Scooter maneuvering and courtesy waving

Bicycle basics for those who forgot how

Rollerblading with dignity

Longboarding without collateral damage

Each session ends with participants circling up for a brief reminder that “real rebellion happens on sidewalks, not through fences.”

Sunday Morning Pop-Up Clinics

The training sessions take place in the empty Aldi parking lot early Sunday mornings—prime time before the rush for discount donuts and $2.99 mums. Brett, equipped with a whistle and clipboard, guides attendees through obstacle courses built with recycling bins and moral clarity.

One teen, caught between curiosity and peer pressure, said, “I thought it’d be lame, but then he did a wheelie and quoted something about community or whatever. I don’t know. It was kind of cool.”

Not Everyone’s a Fan

Despite growing interest, not everyone’s sold. One skeptical parent, holding onto a brand-new mini ATV like it was a newborn, grumbled, “He wants my kid to ride a scooter? On pavement? Like a dork?”

Brett’s response: “Correct.”

The Road Ahead

Rumors swirl about an upcoming walking club spinoff and a YouTube series titled “Kick Push Progress”. In the meantime, Brett can be spotted coasting through City Park on his scooter, politely nodding at joggers, correcting helmet straps, and offering unsolicited advice to anyone on four wheels and a bad attitude.

Editor’s Note: Last week’s headline incorrectly stated Brett was “starting a scooter gang.” He has since clarified it is “a club with values, and a loose dress code.”
