*Two Markets. One Town. Zero Dogs Allowed (if you're a vendor).*

In a town known for pork tenderloins, Vactor trucks, and surprising amounts of civic passion, Streator has now added “farmers market turf war” to its summer Saturday routine.

That’s right: every Saturday, two separate farmers markets spring to life in our community — at the exact same time.

🎩 Market #1: The Westgate Side Hustle

Located on the east sidewalk of the Westgate Parking Lot, this market cozies up under the protective shade of the Pluto Coffee and Tea canopy. No tents needed. Just show up with a table, a chair, and your world-famous pickled green beans. Bonus points if you bring a cash box and a smile.

What sets Westgate apart? Well, besides being in a spot once reserved for cart returns and shopping nostalgia, Pluto Coffee and Tea has been known to fire up a grill and serve hot dogs. No one’s exactly sure why. They just do it. And frankly, it works.

Call it farmer’s market meets tailgate — a place where you can grab local honey and a hot dog in one fluid motion without ever stepping on grass.

🌳 Market #2: The Parkside Original

Meanwhile, down at the southwest corner of City Park, vendors line up all the way down Park Street. It’s the OG market with green space, friendly chatter, and the comforting backdrop of big trees and summer breeze.

It’s everything you want a farmers market to be: wholesome, heartfelt, and slightly chaotic in a way that reminds you you’re not in the suburbs.

But not all is serene. Last year, one vendor’s dog dug a hole under their own table, causing enough of a stir that the city had to step in. Now, in a bold piece of policy straight out of a Jane Jacobs footnote, vendors have been told:

“Please leave your dogs at home.”

The public can still bring pets (for now), but vendors? Not a chance. Dig once, shame on you. Dig twice, and you're out of the lettuce business.

So what’s a loyal Streatorite to do?

Do you support the heritage of City Park, or the plucky shade of Westgate Plaza? Do you want veggies with vistas or zucchini next to a hot dog stand?

Some residents split the difference, doing the Great Streator Shuffle — parking once, power-walking twice, and grabbing breakfast in between. Others pick a side and defend it like it’s a hometown football rivalry.

Either way, we all win.

Because in a world where small towns are losing grocery stores, local businesses, and places to just be, Streator has two Saturday morning spots where neighbors still gather — even if they’re divided by pavement and paw prints.

So bring a tote. Bring cash. And if you’re a vendor, for the love of heirloom tomatoes, leave the dog at home.
