Hold onto your cowboy hats, Streator — the Wild West has arrived at 122 North Bloomington Street. The Streator Area United Way is saddling up for its latest fundraiser, Escape Streator: Wild Wild West, a themed escape room experience running from June 12 through August 14\. The concept? Help Hopalong Cassidy and his posse catch a gang of elusive bank robbers before they ride off into the sunset.

The cost is $50 per group (maximum of 5 people) — cheaper than a train robbery, and you don’t even need to bring your own horse. Appointments are now open, and spots are expected to go faster than a six-shooter draw.

A Mission with Purpose

While the event may be all about fun, the cause is anything but frivolous. Every dollar raised through Escape Streator goes directly to support Streator Area United Way’s network of local nonprofit organizations — a coalition that tackles real issues in our community, from hunger and homelessness to early childhood development and mental health support.

Founded on the principle that we’re stronger together, the Streator Area United Way has quietly been one of the city’s most effective engines for civic good. Through annual campaigns, workplace giving, and creative fundraisers like this one, United Way redistributes thousands of dollars each year to dozens of local programs — helping small, scrappy nonprofits do big, life-changing work.

In recent years, as federal funding has grown unpredictable and larger philanthropic dollars tend to skip smaller towns like ours, the local United Way has filled a vital gap — ensuring Streator solutions stay rooted in Streator soil.

Why It Matters

Let’s be honest: in a time when a lot of charity work feels like it disappears into the void, the Streator Area United Way keeps it local. It’s not just another nonprofit; it’s a backbone. If you’ve ever been helped by a food pantry, attended a youth program, or received a referral through a local human services provider — odds are, United Way dollars helped make it happen.

And now, instead of another rubber-chicken dinner or awkward silent auction, they’re giving us a way to support that mission and get locked in a room with our friends to solve puzzles. This is the kind of innovation Streator needs more of — creative, engaging, and tied directly to making life better here.

So gather your gang, put on your best cowboy logic, and see if you can escape the Wild Wild West. The robbers are getting away — and Hopalong Cassidy needs your help. Appointments can be made now through the Streator Area United Way website: streatorareaunitedway.org.

And remember: you’re not just escaping a room — you’re investing in a stronger, more united Streator. Yeehaw.
