The City of Streator has once again opened the gates to municipal glory, posting a now-legendary call for a new Public Works Technician—a position known by insiders as “Guardian of the Orange Cones” and “Shoveler of Slightly Wet Asphalt.”

Starting at a generous $23/hour, the job offers everything a dedicated local could want: a stable paycheck, excellent benefits, and the undeniable power of wielding a city-issued shovel. The only catch? You must either possess a CDL license or at least have the raw ambition to get one in six months—which, for many applicants, means finally letting go of the dream of never leaving your garage.

“This is your chance to be part of something bigger than yourself,” said a spokesperson who may or may not have been leaning on a jackhammer that hasn’t worked since 2011\. “Our team ensures that at least one out of every five potholes gets filled before winter.”

The benefits are robust: paid time off, the occasional leftover Casey’s pizza during snow events, and unspoken community respect. “We don’t get thank-you cards,” said one longtime technician, “but we do get shouted at by old men in Buick LeSabres who want to know why the street wasn’t plowed at 3 a.m. during an ice storm.”

Applications are available at City Hall (204 S. Bloomington St.) or online at www.ci.streator.il.us. All hopeful ditch diggers, cone movers, and culvert whisperers must apply by June 6, 2025.

In true Streator fashion, the city is also an Equal Opportunity Employer, which means even the guy who once tried to spray-paint over a pothole instead of fixing it is welcome to apply again.

So if you’re tired of just yelling at the roads and want to actually do something about them—apply today. The cones await.
