The City of Streator has officially kicked off the Iowa Avenue FAU Roadway project, marking a significant infrastructure investment along one of its most important corridors. According to a recent update from Mayor Tara Bedei, this project will enhance nearly 5,000 feet of roadway stretching from Main Street to Johnson Street.

The scope of improvements is substantial: 9,200 feet of new curb and gutter, 19,000 square feet of new sidewalks, drainage upgrades, and fresh asphalt pavement. Iowa Avenue, designated both as a Federal Aid Highway and an 80,000-pound truck route, qualifies for special funding assistance. Thanks to its status, Streator successfully secured money through both the Truck Access Route Program (TARP) and a congressionally directed spending (CDS) grant. These funds will cover much of the construction cost.

Construction is being completed in phases. Phase 1, from Main Street to Kent Street, is already well underway. Crews will continue moving north in multiple segments throughout the coming months.

Mayor Bedei described the initiative as an opportunity “to not just improve a road, but to strengthen the backbone of our local infrastructure.”

While it may not be as flashy as a new building or eye-catching mural, a rebuilt road like Iowa Avenue lays the groundwork—literally—for safer travel, smoother logistics, and more confident investment in the city's future. It's also a reminder that real progress often looks like concrete, not ribbon cuttings.

In a time when cities across the country are learning the hard way that growth without maintenance is a recipe for failure, Streator’s attention to these long-term public assets shows foresight. We can celebrate the ribbon, sure—but it’s the rebar underneath that really matters.
