Ah, summer. The kids are sunburned, the popsicles are melting, and parents are already asking, “How is it almost time to think about school again?” But like a rogue LEGO on the living room floor, school registration season is sneaking up fast—and it’s not messing around.

If your child is new to Streator Elementary District #44, or switching schools within the district, it’s time to dust off your filing cabinet. That’s right: proof of residency is required—because apparently just showing up with a kid and a backpack full of fruit snacks doesn’t cut it anymore.

This isn’t your average “sign your kid up with a handshake and a smile” operation. Nope. The district requires three documents—one from each of the following three categories—to confirm you live where you say you live (and not, say, in a tent behind Chix).

CATEGORY 1: Housing Receipts

Bring one: a mortgage statement, a tax bill, or a lease. If you rent, don’t forget to show proof of your last rent payment or bring a notarized affidavit from your landlord. They’ll believe you—if your paperwork doesn’t look like it came from a Monopoly game.

CATEGORY 2: Government-Issued Identity Crisis

You’ll need one of these: a driver’s license, state ID, voter registration card, insurance policy, or a current public aid document. Just make sure it lists your address—and preferably not the address of your old college roommate in Normal.

CATEGORY 3: Utility Bills of Doom

One natural gas, electric, water, sewer, or internet/cable bill will do. If you don’t have any utilities in your name, you’re back to the landlord affidavit. Again.

\> Pro tip: If you have your bills emailed to you, don’t be the parent holding up the line trying to remember your Comcast password. Print that baby out ahead of time.

Already Enrolled and Staying Put?

You’re off the hook! This residency requirement is only for new students and those switching attendance centers. So feel free to go back to pretending summer will last forever.

Questions?

Call the district office at (815) 672-2926\. They’ll walk you through it. They've seen it all—probably even the guy who brought a gym membership and a sandwich receipt as “mail.”

Because in Streator, we don’t just enroll students—we verify 'em.
