The Streator Fire Department has been awarded $25,603 through the Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal’s Small Equipment Grant Program.

The award was announced by the Illinois State Fire Marshal as one of four additional fire department grants in the 2026 program. The other added recipients were Braidwood Fire Protection District, Brimfield Community Fire Protection District and the Village of Oak Park Fire Department.

With the additional awards, the program now supports 264 fire departments statewide and distributes nearly $6 million in equipment funding, according to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

The Small Equipment Grant Program provides grants of up to $26,000 to help fire departments, fire protection districts, township fire departments and nonprofit ambulance services purchase small firefighting and ambulance equipment.

For Streator, the award arrives during a demanding stretch for local emergency services.

In June, the department responded after an EF-3 tornado damaged homes in and around Streator. Later in the month, the city also dealt with a series of alleged arsons that led to criminal charges against one man.

The grant also follows other recent fire department equipment and facility items approved by the city. In June, the Streator City Council approved repairs to the department’s training center and a spectrometer for hazardous materials response. That device is used to help identify unknown substances during emergency calls.

The recent grant and equipment approvals show the quieter side of public safety. Fire departments are judged in moments of crisis, but readiness is built through purchases made before the next call comes in: tools, gear, medical equipment, training equipment and specialized devices that may sit unused until the day they are urgently needed.

Streator’s fire department describes itself as an all-hazards agency responsible for fire suppression, emergency medical response, prevention, inspections, investigations, fire code enforcement and medical services.

The department operates from one station on North Wasson Street. Its apparatus includes engines, a tower truck, ambulances and a rescue vehicle.

Emergency medical work has become a growing part of the department’s role since Streator began providing ambulance service in 2022\. The department’s 2024 annual report said ambulance transports have increased each year since the service began. It also noted that nearly half the time an ambulance is already on a call, another ambulance is requested for service.

A grant of $25,603 will not solve every public safety need in Streator, and it will not erase larger local budget pressures. But for firefighters, paramedics and EMTs, having the right equipment available at the right moment can change the outcome of a call.

For residents, the announcement is a reminder that emergency response is not only built during emergencies. It is built in budgets, grant applications, equipment purchases, training hours and the daily work of keeping a department ready.
