In a month where businesses typically announce seasonal sales or post throwback photos from the 1980s, the Streator Area Chamber of Commerce made a more meaningful move: recognizing the Streator Family YMCA as its May Business of the Month.

And honestly—how could they not?

In a city where the answer to “what are the kids going to do all summer?” is often a shrug and a screen, the YMCA continues to offer a robust schedule of youth programming, community health initiatives, and signature events that put Streator on the map for the right reasons. Take, for example, the upcoming Memorial Day 5K. Starting at 8 a.m. on May 26, the race features chip timing, traffic control, and computerized results—an event as professionally run as any major city marathon but happening right here on Oakley Avenue.

But the Y isn’t just about races and ribbons. This summer, they’re offering themed day camps for kids aged 3–10—everything from superhero week to farm camp. These camps aren’t just glorified babysitting. Each session includes crafts, fine motor skills activities, and outdoor play, all organized with the kind of care that shows they understand youth development isn’t a buzzword. It’s a commitment.

That commitment extends well beyond the summer. The Y’s year-round programming touches nearly every generation in town—from youth swim lessons to senior fitness classes. Their philosophy? Build strong kids, strong families, and strong communities by focusing on youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. It’s not just a motto—it’s what they’ve done for decades, even as other recreational options in town have come and gone.

The facility itself is a community anchor, boasting an Olympic-size pool, basketball and racquetball courts, and a welcoming lobby that doubles as a third place for many locals. It may not have marble floors or rooftop yoga, but what it lacks in luxury it makes up for in legacy.

The Streator YMCA has also remained accessible, offering financial assistance to families in need—because wellness shouldn’t be reserved for those with perfect credit scores and Lululemon gym bags.

While this recognition from the Chamber may be ceremonial, the impact the YMCA has on Streator is anything but. If every “business of the month” made this kind of intergenerational impact, we might not need quite so many revitalization plans.

So hats off to the YMCA. Not just for being May’s honoree—but for showing what it looks like to be a community institution that never stopped doing the work.
