*Two cats lost, one subject questioned after late-night blaze*

A Tuesday evening fire at 1001 North Everett Street in Streator drew a multi-agency response and has now been deemed suspicious by officials. The Streator Fire Department, first dispatched at 6:36 p.m. on June 3, arrived within four minutes to find heavy smoke pouring from the two-story residence.

All occupants had evacuated before crews arrived, but the scene was far from calm. Firefighters quickly entered the home and knocked down the flames within 20 minutes. Unfortunately, two cats perished in the fire, while other animals were rescued. Two more cats remain unaccounted for.

Although the blaze was under control relatively quickly, the story didn’t end there.

After extinguishing the flames, fire crews noted conditions that prompted further scrutiny. What began as a standard fire response turned into a joint investigation, with both the Streator Police Department and the Illinois State Fire Marshal called in. Units remained on scene until just before 1:00 a.m., combing through debris for clues.

Authorities have confirmed that the cause of the fire is being treated as suspicious. One individual has been apprehended and questioned, though no further details have been released.

In total, eight Streator firefighters responded, with assistance from Reading Township and Grand Ridge Fire Departments. Thankfully, no injuries to residents or firefighters were reported. The American Red Cross is providing support to the displaced residents.

The house sustained significant smoke damage throughout, with fire and water damage concentrated around the kitchen and rear porch areas.

Additional assistance was provided by Vermilion Valley Dispatch, ComEd, Nicor, and Illinois American Water. The quick coordination of services helped prevent further destruction.

The Streator Fire Department, established in 1887, continues to uphold its mission of protection and service. As they investigate the cause of this incident, they remind residents that community awareness remains a critical part of public safety.

Anyone with additional information related to this fire is encouraged to contact the Streator Fire Department or Streator Police.
