A barber's grudge and a pie shop's disturbing turn of fortune take the stage tonight as *Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street* opens at Engle Lane Theatre in Streator.

Directed by Nik Frig, the musical runs October 22–25 at the theater, 1012 Columbus Road. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday, with 2 p.m. matinees Saturday and Sunday.

With music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by Hugh Wheeler, the musical follows a wrongly exiled barber who returns to London seeking vengeance. His partnership with Mrs. Lovett, who operates a struggling pie shop, turns that pursuit into a gruesome business arrangement. The show combines dark comedy with a story of obsession, injustice and revenge.

The production is not recommended for younger audiences.

Behind the production is a community theater tradition stretching back nearly seven decades. Community Players of Streator began in 1958, when high school drama instructor Donna Peterson and radio program director Kes Pollack helped organize residents interested in putting on plays.

Constance Engle donated a warehouse to the group in 1960\. Volunteers transformed it into the theater, which now seats 224\. The group has long relied on volunteers, from performers to the people building sets, making costumes, operating lights and working backstage.

The theater lists individual musical tickets at $22, or $20 for seniors. Tickets and purchasing information are available at [englelane.org](https://englelane.org/?ref=thestreatorstandard.com) or through the box office at 815-672-3584\. During productions, the box office opens one hour before showtime.

Next in Engle Lane's regular season is the farce *How the Other Half Loves*, November 19–22.
