Right in the heart of Streator—not on the edge of town, not hidden in the woods, but smack in the middle of the city—is a quaint Storybook home surrounded by two acres of gardens so lush, so perfectly arranged, they feel like something out of a dream. And while thousands of tourists travel here each year to wander its winding paths and admire its blooms, most locals have never bothered to stop.

Welcome to the paradox of Weber House and Garden.

Created by longtime radio host Ted Weber, the home’s pre-Victorian interior is filled with antiques, stories, and charm, while the gardens outside—laid out in a English Arts and Crafts style—offer visitors a moment of peace and beauty just blocks from Route 23\. It’s arguably Streator’s most magical place. And yet, somehow, it’s also the least visited by the people who live here.

Part of the reason may be Ted himself. A legend on the airwaves and a lightning rod in town, he’s known for having an opinion on everything and the confidence to say it. He’s rubbed some folks the wrong way, which may help explain why so few have seen what he’s built. But if you can get past the reputation, you’ll find that the man crafted a masterpiece.

Weber House is the kind of civic treasure that city planners dream about. It brings in tourists. It generates foot traffic. It requires no infrastructure upgrades or TIF districts. Streator’s own comprehensive plan calls it one of our top cultural assets. It’s everything we claim we want from revitalization—but because it doesn’t come with a groundbreaking or a big check from the state, we ignore it.

The truth is, Weber House and Garden is already doing the work. The only thing missing is us.

So maybe it’s time to stop waiting for a new hotel at Northpoint or a big-name developer to swoop in and “save” Streator. Maybe we should start by appreciating what we already have: a living, blooming, hand-built work of art right in the center of our city.

Take the tour. Hear the stories. Walk the garden. Even if you think you know what it is, you’ll probably be surprised.

Because in a town obsessed with finding the next big thing, the most valuable place might just be the one that’s already here.
