AI Comes to Streator—And No, It’s Not About Cows

AI Comes to Streator—And No, It’s Not About Cows

This past Thursday, the Streator Area Chamber of Commerce held an AI workshop at the Streator Public Library, giving local businesses a friendly, no-pressure introduction to the weird and wonderful world of artificial intelligence. The event took place in the Soderstrom Room, with lunch provided by Jimmy John’s—proof that while the robots may be writing our emails, they still can’t make a decent sandwich.

Attendees included a wide range of Chamber members representing everything from Streator Area United Way and the Salvation Army’s 360 Life Center to local businesses like Chismarick Realty, Danchris Nursery, USA Pallet & Warehouse, Streator Clean & Lube, Westgate Plaza, NCAT, and the Business Employment Skills Team (LWIA4). The library, naturally, was also represented—as both host and community knowledge hub.

The Chamber led a discussion on how AI tools like ChatGPT can help with real-world tasks for small businesses: marketing, writing job ads, automating responses, handling schedules, and more. It wasn’t some futuristic sci-fi seminar—it was practical, accessible, and tailored to the needs of Streator’s working world. The message was clear: AI doesn’t have to be intimidating, expensive, or only for people with tech degrees and standing desks.

And let’s be honest—AI has already crept into Streator life in some strange ways. Local Facebook groups are practically run by bots now. You’ve probably seen their handiwork: questions like “What’s your favorite summer smell in Streator?” or “What’s the most magical thing about our community in January?” They feel wholesome until you realize they were posted by a chatbot in Seattle and it's the middle of July. Still, people chime in. “Fresh cut grass.” “The sound of trains at night.” “Breaded pork tenderloins.” And the algorithm smiles.

Not everyone is entirely caught up, though. One attendee said they weren’t sure what kind of AI the workshop was covering. “I thought this was about artificial insemination,” admitted one local farmer on his way out. “Which, to be fair, has also changed a lot thanks to technology.”

We made that part up, but in all seriousness, the Chamber deserves credit for putting together a thoughtful, forward-looking event. It’s easy to scoff at the idea of AI in a town built on coal and glass But workshops like this prove that innovation isn’t just for the big cities—it can start in rooms like the Soderstrom Room, with people who genuinely care about where Streator is headed.

If you’re curious about what AI can do for your small business, or if you’d like a copy of the workshop notes, the Chamber invites you to reach out at (815) 672-2921 or info@streatorchamber.com. And if you have ideas for future programs, they’re all ears—whether you’re thinking workforce development or just trying to figure out who “What'sGoingOnStreator” really is.
