Council to Vote on Cruise Night, Facade Grant, Safety Fixes

Council to Vote on Cruise Night, Facade Grant, Safety Fixes

The Streator City Council meets this Wednesday, June 18 at 7:00 p.m. at City Hall, with an agenda full of seasonal logistics, overdue fixes, and one heartfelt push for safer roads. From car shows to carnival permits, this meeting offers a snapshot of a city trying to balance celebration with responsibility.

đźš— Cruise Night Takes Over Main Street (Temporarily)

Top billing goes to Resolution 2025-22, a request to IDOT for temporary road closures in support of Dream Machines Car Club’s Cruise Night, scheduled for Saturday, August 30.

This year’s event expands into new territory—literally. Main Street from Illinois to Park will be closed from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., allowing for a daytime car show right downtown before rolling straight into the evening cruise. Park Street (IL 23) and Bridge Street will also see partial lane closures.

This is more than just rerouting traffic. It’s a coordinated attempt to make Cruise Night a full-day draw while minimizing confusion and keeping things safe. If all goes to plan, it should be smoother than a fresh coat of wax on a '57 Chevy.

🏚️ Northpoint Facelift: Facade Grant for Schultz Funeral Services

While downtown gets most of the attention, this week’s Resolution 2025-26 reminds us that Northpoint matters too. The council will consider awarding a Building Repair and Façade Grant to Schultz Funeral Services, located at 1 Elizabeth Place—just across from the Northpoint strip.

The proposed renovations include:

  • Full repainting of the east façade
  • Three new windows and a 12-foot garage door
  • Replacement of worn wood shingles with metal roofing
  • Modern wall signage

Though the grant program typically focuses on downtown revitalization, the city notes that these updates meet its design standards and are consistent with broader efforts to enhance commercial corridors. For a part of town better known for what it used to be, any visible investment is welcome.

⚠️ Dangerous Intersection Finally Gets State Attention After Fatality

Resolution 2025-27 is the city’s formal plea to the Illinois Department of Transportation to take action at the notorious intersection of IL Route 18 and East 15th Road in LaSalle County.

Locals have known for years that this intersection is a problem—fast traffic, poor visibility, and frequent close calls have made it a quiet hazard. But in Springfield, it seems to have flown under the radar.

That changed recently when a local woman, whose significant other was tragically killed at that intersection, addressed the Streator City Council with a powerful and emotional appeal.

This resolution is a direct result of her advocacy. While it doesn’t prescribe a specific fix, it formally requests that IDOT study the site and take steps to improve safety. It’s a somber reminder that some changes don’t happen until the community demands them.

🎪 City May Let Nonprofits Skip Carnival Fees

Two ordinances—2025-18 and 2025-19—propose changes to how carnival, circus, and parade permit fees are handled under the Streator municipal code. The most notable update would give the City Manager the authority to waive these fees for nonprofit organizations.

It’s a small but meaningful change—one that could make it easier for fundraising groups like Streator Fest and other community organizations to host events without extra financial hurdles.

🗓️ Committee of the Whole Meetings Could Return

A proposed motion would amend the city’s 2025 calendar to include Committee of the Whole meetings, giving council members more opportunities for informal discussion before formal votes. For local government watchers, this is where the real sausage gets made—and occasionally, burned.

👥 Mayoral Appointments

Mayor Tara Bedei will recommend the following appointments:

  • Plan Commission: Jason Telford (reappointed), Patrick Chismarick (new appointment)
  • Library Board of Trustees: Sandy Austin, Spencer Lawrence, and Jack Schuler (all reappointed through June 30, 2028)

The council will also vote to approve:

  • A fund warrant of $1,095,095.67
  • Meeting minutes from May 7 and May 21
  • Financial reports for May
  • Permission for the Streator Chamber of Commerce to supervise the Labor Day Parade on Sunday, August 31 at noon

🏛️ Want a Say? Show Up.

The meeting is open to the public and takes place at 204 South Bloomington Street. Whether you want to voice support, raise a concern, or just see democracy in action, this is your chance.

Because if there's one thing this agenda shows, it’s that local government still matters—especially when residents speak up and leaders are willing to listen.
