Streator Heats Up—Stay Cool at These Local Spots

Streator Heats Up—Stay Cool at These Local Spots

Streator has officially entered the “walk outside and immediately regret it” portion of the summer. According to the National Weather Service, we’ll be under a Heat Advisory from 10 a.m. Saturday, June 21, through midnight Tuesday, June 24—and early forecasts suggest this may just be the start of an extended hot spell.

While some may insist they don’t need air conditioning (“We never had it growing up!”), the truth is, heat exhaustion doesn’t care how tough you think you are. This is dangerous weather, especially for older adults, young children, and folks without reliable ways to stay cool.

Thankfully, public cooling centers are open across town to help beat the heat:

Streator Public Library – 130 S. Park St.
• Saturday: 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
• Monday & Tuesday: 9 a.m. – 6 p.m.
• Closed Sunday
Quiet, comfortable, and the only place where both your body and your mind can chill out.

Salvation Army 360 Life Center – 126 S. Bloomington St.
• Monday & Tuesday: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
• Closed Saturday & Sunday
Whether you need a break from the heat or just some calm, this place has you covered.

Streator Family YMCA – 710 Oakley Ave.
• Saturday: 8 a.m. – Noon
• Monday & Tuesday: 5 a.m. – 9 p.m.
• Closed Sunday
You don’t need a membership to cool off in the lobby. Just walk in and enjoy the AC.

If you know someone living alone without air conditioning—especially a senior—check in. That five-minute visit could make a life-saving difference.

As for us? We might’ve gone a little quiet during the first wave of this heat—but who among us hasn’t wilted like a library fern in 98-degree weather? Let’s just say the Streator Standard runs on iced coffee and optimism, and both have been in short supply.

But we’re back, hydrated, and hoping you are too. Stay safe, stay cool, and please—if your air conditioning works—don’t take it for granted.
