"Does Anyone Know Why There Is Smoke in the Air?"

"Does Anyone Know Why There Is Smoke in the Air?"

A community bands together to solve the mystery of the obvious.

STREATOR — When local man Jon Graham asked on Facebook, “Does anyone know why there is smoke in the air?”, he probably didn’t expect to launch one of the most ambitious amateur meteorological investigations since someone spotted “weird clouds” over Kangley in 2019.

The smoke had rolled in thick across the Streator area — part ghost, part grill residue — and Jon's inquiry lit up comment sections faster than a dry field behind Northpoint Plaza.

The theories came fast and foggy:

“Canada wild fires,” said Jeanette Berrong, who wasted no time pointing fingers northward.

“Watch the News,” advised Richard Lamagno, a man who clearly believes answers are for those who subscribe to broadcast television.

“Lighting your farts on fire again?” Jonathan Deering asked. Not a diagnosis so much as a bold accusation.

“Yeah puley sirock just exhaled,” added Michael Laughlin, which may be either a cryptic local joke or a sign that someone’s been inhaling the haze a bit too deeply.

One user offered a more terrestrial explanation:
“House on fire, Fuller Ave.”
While another went with the classic sci-fi option:
“Aliens.”

Fred Nimke chimed in with confidence:
“Where else would it be?”—a statement that, while geographically vague, technically isn’t wrong.

Then things got existential.
When John Burt quipped, “My neighbors,” Jon shot back:
“Are you cremating them?”
Burt didn’t miss a beat: “Yep.”
Jon: “Nice.”

Meanwhile, other residents took a more poetic approach to warning their fellow townsfolk:
“Do NOT go outside it’s kinda bad I ran to my car and my lungs was burning 😭,” posted one smoky Samaritan.
Another added: “I smelled it out by south part of town… could hardly breathe.”

And finally, Louis Hollinsaid offered an international policy suggestion:
“We should charge [Canada] a tariff on their smoke.”
It’s unclear if the city council is taking that under advisement.

In the end, no one knew for sure. But the prevailing theory — backed by most of the Internet and all of the nose hairs in Streator — was that yes, once again, Canada wildfires were sharing their seasonal gift with the Midwest.

Still, the original poster never returned with a follow-up.
Maybe the smoke cleared.
Maybe he found the answer.
Maybe, like the smell, he just drifted off into the night.

More to come… once the wind shifts or the aliens land.
